Blest be the Lord, my rock, my might, who trains my fingers for the fight My shield, my righteousness (My shield, my righteousness). My strong high tow’r, my Saviour true, who keeps my enemies subdued My shelter in distress (My shelter in distress). Lord, bow Your heav’ns, in might descend, come touch the hills the mountains rend And they shall smoke and flame (And they shall smoke and flame). As arrows send Your lightning out, to put Your enemies to rout And fill Your foes with shame (And fill Your foes with shame). O You to whom in trust I flee, stretch forth your hand and rescue me From all the foreign throng (From all the foreign throng). Their mouths are false for lies they speak, their hands of strength against the weak, Are filled with craft and wrong (Are filled with craft and wrong). Now I will sing a glad new song, Your praise, O God, I will prolong For You have heard my prayer (For You have heard my prayer). You give the victory to kings, Your own You keep with sheltering wings From cruel sword and snare (From cruel sword and snare). —Psalm 144 (1912 Psalter, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2016)
2.
O Lord of Hosts, how lovely Thy dwelling places are For them my heart is yearning, though I have wandered far, My soul is nearly fainting Thy sacred courts to see My heart and flesh are crying O living God, to Thee. Beneath Thy care the sparrow shall find a place of rest To keep her young in safety the swallow finds a nest Then, Lord, my King almighty, Thy love will shelter me Beside Thy holy altar my home shall ever be. Blest they who dwell in Zion whose joy and strength Thou art Forever they will praise Thee, Thy ways are in their heart Though tired, their tears like showers shall fill the springs of peace And all the way to Zion their strength shall still increase. —Psalm 84 (1912 Psalter, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2016)
3.
My trust is in the Lord; how can you say to me, “Away with speed, and like a bird to your high mountain flee? What can the righteous do? What can for them a- vail, If their foundations be destroyed and all they built on fail?” The Lord in Zion dwells, the Lord's throne is on high: His eyes be- hold the sons of men; O they will sure be tried. The Lord the righteous tries: but wicked men He hates, For all whose hearts love violence His punishment awaits. Fire, winds, and burning coals, on wicked men shall rain; This is the portion of their cup, the cup which they shall drain. Because the righteous Lord delights in righteousness; And with His gracious countenance the upright He will bless. —Psalm 11 (The Psalter of the United Presbyterian Church 1887, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2016)
4.
Arise, O God, set forth Thy rights, pronounce Thy just decree; The heritage of Earth by right belongs, O Lord, to Thee. Among assembled men of might the mighty God doth stand: He stands to order judgment right to judges of the land. “How long will ye, with wrongful aid, the tyrant’s cause protect ? How long, by gift and favor swayed, the wicked man respect?” Arise, O God, set forth Thy rights, pronounce Thy just decree; The heritage of Earth by right belongs, O Lord, to Thee. “Give justice to the fatherless, defend the poor distressed; And give deliv'rance to the weak by lawless power oppressed. All ye are gods, ye kings," I said, "and sons of God Most High; Yet as the sons of men ye fade, and as the princes die." Arise, O God, set forth Thy rights, pronounce Thy just decree; The heritage of Earth by right belongs, O Lord, to Thee. —Psalm 82 (The Psalter of the United Presbyterian Church, 1887 Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2015)
5.
Be my contender in the strife, O Lord my strong defender be Your mighty shield protect my life, Your spear confront my enemy Amid the conflict O my Lord, Your precious promise let me hear That faithful reassuring word: “I am your Savior, do not fear.” My foes rejoice at my dismay, but You O Lord have seen it all; O be no longer far away, nor silent when to You I call. O vindicate me from Your throne, O Lord, my righteous cause maintain; You are my Lord and God alone; awake, and make Your justice plain. I look to You, my God, my Lord; my righteous judge, to You I pray; Let not my foes cry out with scorn and laugh with joy at my dismay. Give woe and shame to those whose spite would see my righteous cause destroyed; But those who in the good delight, let them be glad and shout for joy. Yes, let the Lord be magnified, because Your servants You have blessed And from the morning to the night, I daily praise Your righteousness My soul is joyful in the Lord, in His salvation I rejoice; To Him my heart will praise accord and bless His name with thankful voice. —Psalm 35 (The Psalter 1912, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2016)
6.
With Joy and Gladness in my soul I hear the call to prayer Let us go up to God’s own house and bow before Him there We stand within your sacred walls, O Zion, blest for aye Wherein the people of the Lord united homage pay. They come to learn Jehovah’s will, His mighty deeds to own For there is judgment’s royal seat, Messiah’s kingly throne Pray Zion’s city may be blest and have abundant peace For all that love you in their hearts shall prosper and increase. I pray the Lord that peace may still within your walls abound And ever in your citadels prosperity be found Yea, for the sake of friends and kin my heart desires her peace And for the house of God the Lord my care shall never cease. —Psalm 122 (The Psalter 1912, Alt. Henry C. Haffner 2016)
7.
Preserve me, Lord, in time of need; For refuge to Thy throne I flee, But have no merits there to plead: My goodness cannot reach to Thee. When God is nigh, my faith is strong; His mighty arm will keep me sure: Be glad, my heart; rejoice, my tongue; My dying flesh shall rest secure. Though in the dust I lay my head, Yet, gracious God, Thou wilt not leave My soul for ever with the dead, Nor lose Thy children to the grave. My flesh shall Thy first call obey, Shake off the dust, and rise on high; Then shalt Thou lead the wondrous way Up to Thy throne above the sky. There streams of endless pleasure flow; And full discov'ries of Thy grace (Which we but tasted here below) Spread heav'nly joys through all the place. —Psalm 16 (Isaac Watts, 1719; Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2015)
8.
The floods have lifted up, they lifted up their voice, The floods have lifted up their waves and made a mighty noise. God reigns, and He is clothed with majesty most bright; Jehovah clothes Himself with strength, and wears a belt of might. The world is firmly fixed, that it can not depart; Your throne is fixed of old, and You from everlasting are. The floods have lifted up, they lifted up their voice, The floods have lifted up their waves and made a mighty noise. But yet the Lord on high, is mightier by far Than noise of many waters is, or great sea-billows are. Your testimonies all in faithfulness excel; And holiness forever, Lord, Your house becometh well. The floods have lifted up, they lifted up their voice, The floods have lifted up their waves and made a mighty noise. —Psalm 93 ( The Psalter of the United Presbyterian Church 1887, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2016)
9.
Sing Praise to God, to His name sing Extol Him with your voice, Who rides on clouds, He is the Lord Before His face rejoice Because the Lord a father is Unto the fatherless; And he defends the widow in His place of holiness You gave abundant showers, God; You sent a plenteous rain; You did Your tired inheritance Refresh and did sustain Your congregation settled there In that place did abide; And from Your bounty for the poor O God, You did provide Bless'd be the Lord and praise to Him Who is our savior sure; Who daily bears our burdens and Salvation does procure —Psalm 68 (Scottish Metrical Psalter, 1650; Alt. Julie Tennent, 2013)
10.
O God, You have rejected us, and broken our defense; You have been angry, but in grace restore us once again. O, You have torn and rent our land, Your judgments dread appall; O heal her shattered strength before she stumble to her fall A holy banner You have giv’n to those who fear Your name, The righteous run to see it wave, and thus the truth proclaim. That Your beloved may be saved and from their foes set free Help with the might of Your right hand, in mercy answer me. The Lord in holiness has said: “I will triumphant be, All heathen lands I claim as Mine and they will bow to Me.” A holy banner You have giv’n to those who fear Your name, The righteous run to see it wave, and thus the truth proclaim. Now therefore, who will lead us, on sin’s strongholds to possess? No longer cast us off, O God, but give our hosts success. O give Your help against the foe for help of man is vain, With God we shall do valiantly, the vict’ry He will gain. A holy banner You have giv’n to those who fear Your name, The righteous run to see it wave, and thus the truth proclaim. Amen. Amen. —Psalm 60 (The Psalter 1912, Alt Henry C. Haffner 2017)
11.
Blest the man who fears Jehovah, Ever walking in His ways By your toil you shall be prospered And be happy all your days In your wife you shall have gladness She will fill your home with good Happy in her loving service And the joys of motherhood Joyful children, sons and daughters Shall around your table meet Olive plants in strength and beauty Full of hope and promise sweet Lo on him who fears Jehovah Shall this blessedness attend For Jehovah out of Zion Shall to you His blessing send You shall see God's kingdom prosper All your days till life shall cease May you see your children's children On our people, Lord, be peace Amen. —Psalm 128 (Psalter 1912, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2017)

about

This collection contains eleven settings from the Book of Psalms, with music inspired by life in rural Tennessee. Originally written for Sunday morning worship at Parish Presbyterian Church in Franklin, TN, each Psalm text is set to a melody named for places and people from around our community, middle Tennessee, and the South. But these tunes are also equally at home on the front porch with Granddaddy’s bible and a glass of sweet tea. You’ll enjoy the sounds of tight vocal harmonies, lonesome fiddle, twangy telecaster, and the occasional banjo and pedal steel. Most importantly, you’ll be inspired to meditate on timeless truths from Scripture.
