lyrics

In Judah the Almighty's known,
(Almighty there by wonders shown,)
His name is great in Israel;
His house of prayer in Salem stands;
The majesty that heaven commands
in Zion condescends to dwell.
He broke the flashing arrows there,
destroyed their weapons, sword and spear,
For slain the mighty army lay;
then Zion's fame on earth is spread,
Of greater glory, greater dread,
than hills where lions take their prey.

Those valiant chiefs that came for spoil,
themselves met there a shameful foil;
Securely down to sleep, they lay:
they wake no more; their stoutest band
Could not lift a resisting hand
against the Lord upon that day.
When Jacob's God began to frown,
the horse and riders overthrown
Together slept in endless night.
When You, whom earth and heaven fear,
Do once with wrathful look appear,
can mortals stand within Your sight?

From heaven on high earth heard its doom;
it stilled with fear, when You did come
To save the humble and the poor:
The wrath of man shall yield You praise;
their last attempts but serve to raise
the triumphs of our mighty Lord.
Vow to the Lord, you nations; bring
your gifts to the eternal King.;
To Him due reverence you shall pay:
the proudest kings that here do dwell;
And earthly rulers terrible,
will fear the Lord upon His day.
